QADR: The Fabelmans

Quick and Dirty Review of “The Fabelmans”

Not a lot to say here, actually. “The Fabelmans” is a glossy, Spielburgian biopic about his years growing up, except all the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

While it was interesting to see how the young director got his start, the film is really about the main character discovering that his mother is not all that she seems. It’s a weird angle for a “family” movie, which is mostly how the film is presented. It feels like pure, self-indulgent schmaltz, cute but ultimately pointless.

I didn’t learn enough about the “young director” and too much about the family dynamic. And I found Michelle William’s portrayal to be lacking in the qualities that make you want to root for her.

5 out of 10, a missed opportunity.
